Is it just me or is the new style of bellydancing (ATS et al) tribal fusion looking more and more like mime and less and less like dance. All these chopping, jerking isolations are straight out of the mime classes I took in the 70's. The difference was startling when I looked at some traditional i.e. arabic or turkish or cabaret belly dancing videos on Youtube.com. Do I really want belly dancing to morph into hiphop (which also was heavily influened by mime, i.e. robotics ala Shields and Yarnell? Not that I can stem the flow of the tide. Dance will evolve as it will and go on long after I am dust. But before you all hop on the fusion wagon, ask yourself if something isn't getting lost in the translation. Turn off your sound, and ignore the costume and you'll see what I mean.
